What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are shells that are made of tooth-colored materials, which cover the front surface of the tooth to enhance its appearance. The shells are bonded to the tooth itself and can last between 5 to 10 years before having to be replaced. They are also stained resistant and offer a natural tooth appearance without having to extensively shape the tooth prior to application. They are often a good alternative to dental crowns and are an effective way to change the look and shape of your teeth quickly while adding strength to the structure of the tooth itself.
What dental issues do porcelain veneers fix?
Porcelain veneers remedy a variety of common dental issues. Teeth that are worn, chipped or broken can be fixed by porcelain veneers, as well as those that are misaligned, uneven, stained, or irregularly shaped. In addition, teeth with gaps can also be remedied via porcelain veneers, given that veneers are able to close the spaces between teeth. Those that have discolored teeth as a result of prescription drugs, such as tetracycline, excessive fluoride or resin fillings, can also benefit from porcelain veneers. You can choose the shade of your new porcelain veneers, which enables you to closely match the natural shade of teeth that will not be treated with veneers.
What is involved in the porcelain veneer process?
After the dental professionals at Kane & Kerper Dentistry of Oxnard have examined your smile to ensure that you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers, x-rays or impressions of your mouth may be taken. To prepare the tooth for the veneers, approximately half a millimeter of enamel will be removed from the surface of your tooth, after which a model of the tooth will be made. This model will be sent out to a laboratory, where your dental veneers will be constructed. This process usually takes about 1 to 2 weeks. Once your dentist receives the veneers, another appointment will be scheduled at which you the veneer will be shaped and trimmed to fit your tooth snugly. Before it is affixed permanently, your tooth will be cleaned and etched. A special dental cement will be used to adhere the veneer to the tooth, and a light will be applied to harden the cement quickly. Your bite will then be evaluated and any excess cement will be removed by the dentist.
